How many AdSense ads can be shown per pages on my website. I had heard that only three ads can be shown per page on any website?

Yes, you had heard it correctly. But it is outdated news. In the past, google allowed six ad units per page. (three normal ads plus three links ads).
So now there is no such limit on a number of ads per page. Now, you can show as many as ads you want per page.
